Academic Writing Sample
I have written several academic essays during my time as a graduate student and instructor. I’m particularly happy with this piece because it represents a major effort in stepping away from my background in Contemporary American Literature to write a Professional and Technical Communication piece. The essay itself explores how video games like The Division offer discursive means of exploring complex topics like Bio(in)security. This exploration intersects video games, user-centered design principles, and collaborative knowledge creation (primarily via Bruno Latour’s actor-network theory), and the opening pages provided in this sample attempt to break down some of these complex theories to provide a clear foundation for any potential reader.
